RWTH Aachen self assessments are online advising processes for deciding what to study. Participation in one (rarely two) of these self assessments is mandatory. You can find which self assessment you need to take for this subject in the course of study description under "Prerequisites". You will need to show proof of participation in a subject specific self assessment in order to enroll (not to apply). You can print out the participation certificate yourself.
Dates and Deadlines
Architects plan rooms and design spaces – rooms, buildings, municipalities, cities, or even landscapes. They take into consideration all of the technical, aesthetic, and social aspects, that guide their planning to defined goals.
Buildings should look nice, but they should also be functional, environmentally friendly, reasonably priced, and be stable for the long term. Old structures should be preserved and integrated. Public space serves transportation, housing, economies, and recreation. Thus it must offer a balance between private and public spheres. In order to consider so many factors at once, architects learn to systematically determine the different dimensions of a design tasks.
In the architecture studies at RWTH Aachen demanding design tasks promote students' creativeness and the acquisition of professional implementation techniques. They guarantee solid training in drawing and design, which makes it possible to later sketch and discuss complex designs without preparation.
The Integrated Project in the fourth semester represents the high demands of studies at RWTH in the construction-tehcnical field and demonstrates the unique training niveau: students work on a complex problem that challenges their creativity and drawing and design skills. Aside from aesthetic aspects, three aspects must also be taken into consideration: structural design, support structure, and building technology. Additionally, consideration is given to the integration of innovative technologies in architectural planning, for example in the implementation of intelligent or self-supporting facade systems.
During the project students consistently reflect and optimize their design solutions. Theory-driven subjects such as architectural and art history and architectural and planning theory accompany the education and offers a framework for orienting creative work.
The subdisciplines structural engineering for high-rise structures and and urban and landscape planning are also represented at RWTH. The curriculum does not allow students to specialize during their Bachelor's studies. One of the subjects is chosen as a focus during Master's studies:
- The architecture specialization focuses on the design and structural design of individual buildings.
- The urban planning specializations focuses on the development of neighborhoods, cities, and regions.
The first academic years offers an overview of architects' main activities. Practical tasks helps new students to expand their creative abilities. Projects and designs are completed alone or in groups of four to five students. Aside from skills in hand-drawing, students also acquire detailed skills in CAD drawing.

The elective subjects offer the possibility to advance students's knowledge in all areas and are available to help them sharpen their individual profile. In the transit module, an elective subject opens up new areas of application within the context of another scientific discipline.
Future architects will find fields of work worldwide – especially wherever a building boom is being observed. For this reason, the Faculty of Architecture expressly supports student mobility. It offers many possibiliies to gather experiences abroad: in the EU mobility program ERASMUS+ alone it maintains partnerships with 41 renowned European universities. International summer universities and internship stays in other countries supplement this offer.
Students profit not only from the Faculty's own study abroad programs but also from the University's strategic partnerships with international universities. For example, while completing their final project or paper they can complete a brief stay at one of the IDEA League universities. These stays abroad are partially funded by RWTH financial aid.
Architecture students are shapers. They intensively work on the topics shape, function, and feasibility. This means, they require creative talent, organizational and technical undersanding, and spatial imagination and thinking. Many different projects are assigned during studies, which students must then conceptually implement, draw out, and then build on a smaller scale. Materials for models are wood, paper, cardboard, and metal materials. It is extremely important that students are read to work with their hands, carefully and precisely. Other students and lecturers evaluate the different approaches using reasonable criteria, that contribute to improving the designs. Thus, students learn how to describe and optimize creative processes using certain scientific - and justifiable - criteria. The workload lies mostly in the designs, depictions, and building the models. This takes a lot of time and requires a lot of curiosity and openness to criticism. Prospective students should have good resilience a high level of tolerance for frustration, in order to muster up motivation again and again for the design process.
Interest in creative work is the basic requirement for architecture studies. Students are not artists, who design without purpose – their goal is to find realistic and useable solutions for the demands of a design. Whoever is looking to primarily examine or workth with "pure" art or art history, should consider art courses of study at another university as an interesting alternative. However, in contrast, those who are primarily interested in the technical side of building, should find out more about the civil engineering course of study. The content and qualification goals of the RWTH Aachen Faculty of Architecture courses of study and modules use the standards of professional associations for archictects and urban planners and the standards of European and international educational guidelines as minimum standards.
Bachelor's studies end with an initial career-qualifying degree. A Bachelor's enables graduates to assist with instructed planning and design tasks in architecture offices or other providers of creative services.
Once they have a Bachelor´s and a Master's degree and two years of professional experience, RWTH graduates have the possibility of being accepted into the Architects' Guild. Then, they are allowed to use the title of "architect" or "urban planner" and possess authorization to present building documents.
Due to their comprehensive education graduates of RWTH work in all fields of the building and planning sector. They design buildings and supervise construction. Aside from these classic fields of work additional professional opportunities are available in the fields of design, interior design, the construction of exhibition stands, landscape architecture, and more. Architects are often seen as problem solvers in consulting. They use their creative potential and ability to analyze to solve complex problems.

Master's Degree Prospects
Graduates of the Bachelor's program can choose between two consecutive Master's programs:
- Urban Planning
Both programs offer a great deal of flexibility. They enable independent, individual work and offer students the chance to be included in the research and design focuses of the RWTH institutes.
The Faculty's diverse scientific activities make it possible to shape studies as one like, oriented towards students' interests and abilities.
Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s Comprehensive Examination Regulation. Examination regulations are only published in German as they are legally binding.
Subject Specific Exam Regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
The Bachelor course of study in Architecture is offered by the Faculty of Architecture . It has made history over many decades: renowned architects from Aachen like Gottfried Böhm, Volkwin Marg, and Peter Kulka strongly influenced contemporary architecture.
